The Research Group of Visual Semiotics and Multimodality (Grupo de Pesquisa em Semiótica Visual e Multimodalidade-GPSM) aims to deepen on Critical Discourse Analysis under perspective of visual social-semiotics. The GPSM uses a linguistic and visual additional approach, which belongs to Language Studies in order to analyze verbal and non-verbal texts which have a polysemic real meaning. We use in this project as theoretical approach the Visual Design Grammar of Kress & van Leeuwen (1996) adapted to Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL) of Halliday (1978; 1985; 1989; 1994), so as to achieve following objectives: 1. to extend concept of language so that it can gather another semiotic concepts as images; 2. to link visual semiotic and linguistics fields; 3. to produce a systematic and broad methodology as an analytical tool using Visual Design Grammar of Kress e van Leeuwen (1996); 4.to interrelate analysis of texts and images and demonstrate similarities and differences between visual and language grammars; 5.to succeed difficulties of analyzing non-verbal semiotics means such as expressions, music and gestures and offer thus a complete analysis of multimodal aspects of language; 6. to extend understanding to language and its functioning; 7. to engage in an innovating proposal of visual literacy to Brazilian educational context.
