PROJECTS:

1. STUDIES ABOUT THE LINGUISTICS ACCOMMODATION IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE (BOUND TO THE PARAIBA STATE LANGUAGE VARIATION PROJECT)

The aim of this project is to investigate linguistics accommodation process among Brazilian Portuguese varieties. In view of Communication Accommodation Theory (GILES et al., 1987), we intend to understand how speakers acquire new discursive, lexical and phonetic-phonological traits. Specific objectives: a) to create a corpus of speakers that have been living for more than; 2 years in João Pessoa in order to understand processes of linguistics convergence b) to discuss on the basis of data and studies carry out in other regions of Brazil structural and social variables in linguistics convergence process; c) to compare differences and similarities between data of João Pessoa and other regions of Brazil.

2. STUDIES ON PHONOLOGICAL ACQUISITION OF FOREING LANGUAGE FROM VARIABLE STANDARDS OF BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

The aim of this project is to understand how mother tongue variation affects phonological learning of foreign language (highlighting English as L2). We intend to compare the variation of Paraiba state dialect to others dialects of Brazilian Portuguese in order to analyze degree variation of L1 in L2 acquisition. The main objective is to discover the consequences of these variations on the light of a theoretical-analytical perspective of Optimality Theory (PRINCE & SMOLENSKY, 1993, McCARTHY & PRINCE, 1993, 1995).
