In the last few decades interest has been growing in translation history and historiography, a field that is being firmly established in Brazil, as attested by theme issues of journals and its presence as a thematic area in academic conferences. As Judith Woodsworth pointed out in 1995, “Interest in the history of translation has grown in recent years. Since the 1980s, in particular, translation scholars have been aware of the importance of historical research and have begun to define appropriate methods and theoretical models for the new subdiscipline” (p. 9). This is such a wide-ranging area that it can be segmented or organized in different branches or perspectives, such as one that identifies three subfields: the history of practices, the history of theories, and the history of translators. The first subfield includes the most varied types of translated texts and translation strategies, according to synchronic or diachronic criteria: belles infidèles, foreignizing translation, imitation, adaptation, and so on. The history of theories includes concepts of translation, statements on translation, evaluation criteria and translation criticism in different times and places. The history of translators, in turn, meets the call of Andrew Chesterman and others for greater emphasis on the main agent of translation, whose relevance justifies the creation of a sub-area in Translation Studies, which he names Translator Studies. Chesterman (2017, p. 326) observes that there are innumerable topics to be investigated in this field: (i) the status of (different kinds of) translators in different cultures, rates of pay, working conditions, role models and the translator’s habitus, professional organizations, accreditation systems, translators’ networks, copyright, and so on; (ii) questions relating to gender and sexual orientation, and power relations, and how these factors affect a translator’s work and attitudes; (iii) the public image of the translator’s profession, as seen e.g. in the press, or in literary works in which one of the central characters is a translator or interpreter; (iv) research on translators’ attitudes to their work, as revealed in essays, interviews, translators’ prefaces and notes, etc.; and (v) the wide field of translators’ ideologies and translation ethics.
WORKS CITED
Chesterman, Andrew. “The name and nature of Translator Studies” (2009).
