The Graduate Program in Philosophy has been active for over 30 years, having been established in 1979. Currently rated as a Level 3 program, it focuses on the broad Area of Concentration: Philosophy, structured around three research lines:
1. Phenomenology;
2. Philosophical Hermeneutics and;
3. Ethics and Political Philosophy.
The program has produced over 181 graduates, primarily from the Northeast region of Brazil, while also attracting students from various parts of the country. This reflects the program’s capacity to train highly qualified professionals with academic rigor.
Since 1994, the program has undergone significant transformations. One major change was the discontinuation of the Logic research area, while the Philosophy of History area gradually lost momentum due to the retirement of key faculty members. A collective effort to restructure the program led to a curricular reform in 2002, resulting in a more coherent and comprehensive academic framework. This reform helped redefine the program’s identity, aligning it with the expertise of its faculty and the diversity of research proposals submitted by students. Over time, the program has expanded beyond its regional scope, gaining national relevance.
In recent years, the Graduate Program in Philosophy has experienced significant growth and consolidation. This progress is evident in the increasing number of dissertations defended annually, the growing number of accredited PhD professors, and the rising productivity in both teaching and student research. Another key factor in the program’s development has been its comprehensive curricular structure, which has facilitated the expansion of its faculty and the strengthening of its research lines. The hiring of new faculty members with doctoral degrees, who contribute both to the Department of Philosophy and to the graduate program, has further reinforced its academic standing.
Objectives:
1) o train highly qualified professionals in Philosophy for both teaching and research, fostering advanced skills for the production and dissemination of philosophical knowledge;
2) To promote regional academic collaboration by strengthening ties between graduate programs in the Northeast, enhancing the growth of Philosophy as a field in this region, and fostering high-quality intellectual production across all research lines;
3) To promote the insertion of the Program at national and international level through agreements and articulations with other academic centers.
