Graduate Program in Cognitive Neuroscience And Behavior (PPgNeC)

Program Name: Cognitive Neuroscience and Behavio
Basic Area: PSYCHOBIOLOGY
Evaluation Area: PSYCHOLOGY

HISTORY

The Graduate Program, Master’s Degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Behavior (PPgNeC), is based in the Department of Psychology at the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Art at UFPB. The course was created by Resolution 26/2012 of the Superior Council of Education, Research and Extension (CONSEPE) of the Federal University of Paraíba, João Pessoa, on June 26, 2012. The Master’s Course was recommended by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel of the Ministry of Education) in February 2013 and implemented in the first semester of 2013.

OBJECTIVES

The general objectives of the Program are:

  1. To train teachers for higher education in the areas that integrate Cognitive Neurosciences and Psychobiology;
  2. To train researchers and develop research activities, as well as advanced studies that meet regional and national needs;
  3. To qualify human resources with a broad domain in the emerging field of cognitive neurosciences that can act in the areas of psychobiology: basic psychological processes, neuropsychology and psychopharmacology;
  4. To promote the diffusion and dissemination of the scientific production of teachers and students;
  5. To promote innovation and social inclusion, strengthening the link between basic and applied research;
  6. To produce knowledge and train human resources aimed at the integration of professionals from different fields. The program aims to contribute to the training of human resources from different fields, including: Psychology, Education, Linguistics, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Nursing, Biology, among others that are interested in the study of behavior and cognition;
  7. To integrate postgraduate studies with undergraduated programs from different courses, and particularly in Psychology.

Research Lines:

The Cognitive Neuroscience and Behavior Program is structured in two research lines: (1) Psychobiology, Neuropsychology and Basic Psychological Processes and (2) Preclinical and Clinical Cognitive Neuroscience. The research lines of the program bring together scientific and technological knowledge from the specialties and deeply incorporate in some of the most challenging themes in the field of concentration.

1. Psychobiology: Basic Psychological Processes and Neuropsychology

This research line brings together the study of behavior and the neuropsychophysiological bases of cognition and basic psychological processes, aiming to characterize, evaluate and understand the neural mechanisms underlying development, maturation, plasticity and adaptation to the physical and social environment. This line will add studies on perception, memory, learning, emotion, language and psychopharmacology under normal and pathological conditions, using psychophysical, behavioral, electrophysiological and neuropsychological methods in humans and animals. The idea of this research line is to understand how behavior and the nervous system are associated and how they are influenced by the physical and social environment. The understanding of the foundations that compose animal and human cognition and behavior establishes an integrative conceptual view between neuroscience and psychology.

2.  Preclinical and Clinical Cognitive Neuroscience

It brings together the study of the psychophysiological and psychopharmacological bases of behavior, cognition and basic psychological processes in the conditions of clinical and preclinical evaluation in humans and animal models. In this line, highlights preclinical studies with animals and clinical studies with patients who have mental and neurological disorders or undergoing pharmacological treatments. The studies aim to determine the potential effects and, most important, the risks for humans.
