The Strictu Sensu Academic Master’s Course of the Postgraduate Program in Social Work of the Federal University of Paraíba (PPGSS/UFPB) was created through Resolution No. 202/77 of CONSUNI and was implemented in 1978, with accreditation in 1985, through opinion No. 754/85 of the Federal Council of Education. It presents, in its trajectory, the mark of having been a pioneer in teacher training in the field of Social Work, as the first Master’s Program in the Northeast Region and the fifth in the country.
Analyzing the Program, at the national level, specifically, the Master’s Program/PPGSS, requires that it be enrolled in the historical process of expansion of the postgraduate education in Brazil and situated, above all, in the meaning of the role it has been playing, throughout its trajectory, to consolidate the field of Social Work. In this sense, the historical recovery presented here highlights the resistance that is necessary at the time of its formation in the midst of a dictatorship in Brazil. It is important to emphasize the relevance of this process, precisely in 2018, when the Program celebrated its 40th anniversary.
